On Boxing Day 2004, a tsunami swept across eleven countries in the Indian Ocean and, within 24 hours, killed nearly 250,000 people from fifty-five countries. For the survivors and the bereaved, it was a disaster that has changed their lives forever.
A decade on, this documentary explores how some of those affected have lived through the last ten years. Our contributors share their painful experiences of destruction and loss, but in every story there is something inspirational that shows us that, even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, humans somehow manage to carry on.
Tsunami: Survivors’ Stories tells the story of that fateful day by gathering powerful testimony from those who survived being swept away by the wave, as well as those who lost loved ones. Using a rich palette of user-generated content, home movies and news archive we tell the dramatic and terrifying story of the day itself, as well as exploring life for our contributors today.
